The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) launched an SMS-based ticketing system to make the process easier and touts free. Now the passengers can get tickets without any trouble and it will also reduce the long queue for the reservation from the station.
In this process, the passengers have to register their mobile number with their bank and the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).After the registration the passengers can book tickets and make payment via SMS.
HOW TO BOOK TICKETS VIA SMS

(You have to register at www.irctc.in for an IRCTC account and Mobile Money Identifier is a 4-digit number which you can get from the list of 26 banks which offer this service on http://www.ncpi.org.in/bankmember.aspx)
Step 2. After the registration process, you will be able to book your railway ticket via SMS. For the booking type a SMS including the travel information (train number, date of journey, boarding station , destination, number of passengers, age and gender of passengers) and send this SMS to 139 and 5676714.
Step 3. When passenger sends SMS for booking ticket, the IRCTC will send a transaction id with total amount of the tickets via SMS to the passenger. After this passenger will have to reply by sending MMID and one time password to make payment.
Step 4. After the payment , ticket will be booked and passenger will receive a conformation message which will be considered as a valid ticket during the journey.
Note: The passenger will have to show the ticket booking message and an ID proof during the journey.
Railway Board Chairman ‘Vinay Mittal’ commented that launching of ticketing through SMS would be great step to make user friendly booking system although everyone knows tapping the button on mobile phones. Seeing the modern structure of Railway in other developed countries, Railway took this initial step. The SMS system is easier and better then e-ticket booking and now the people will not need to go to ticket counter.
According to Mittal, the service will be more improved gradually along with its payment options, value added services like updates and more. The board is working on safety for making secured and fast payment. I think everyone must try atleast once this SMS ticketing option.
