5 Great PC Based Games for 2015

Now that the next generation consoles are out, there is a lot of attention being given to the various games and hardware meant to complement those systems. Yet we cannot forget the ultimate gaming machine, the personal computer. Last year was a great year for PC games, and this year is likely to be just as good, if not better. Here are five games you should be checking out, or looking forward to, this year.

1. Jotun

An action-adventure game that is made with hand drawn artwork, in Jotun you first traverse randomly generated environments which take their inspiration heavily from Norse Mythology. The story follows a Viking woman who is trying to restore her honor. The main enemies you fight, other than the frightening environments themselves, are huge elementals that will make some people think of the bosses in Shadow of the Colossus.

One of the most exciting crowd funded games of recent memory, Jotun is currently in alpha and will be released to the public later this year. I would recommend it to those enjoy atmospheric games, indie games, or those looking for something just a little bit different from the big titles you’ve been seeing lately.

2. Kerbal Space Program

Another game just a little out of the ordinary for people to look at this year is Kerbal Space Program, a sim-like title in which the goal is to design spaceships to leave the atmosphere and build up a space program. However, for the most part, the game works as a sandbox, and most of the fun is to be had by experimentation. You will fail, but you will also learn, and it will get better and better for you.

Kerbal Space Program has recently left early access, but the developers say that they will continue to release updates to the game to improve it (and I have every inclination to believe them). This is a really great game to just relax with.

3. Ori and the Blind Forest

A classic platformer with some not so classic elements, Ori and the Blind Forest has received tons of positive praise from both consumers and critics alike for its gorgeous visuals and emotionally engaging story, blurring the line some draw between video games and art. Really fun to play for an hour or two when you have the time, even though you’ll likely want to play the whole thing through at once.

It will remind some of games like Super Metroid or Castlevania, reusing environments when you gain new abilities and giving you lots of reasons to explore the world over and over again.

4. Evolve

A major multiplayer first-person shooter released earlier this year, Evolve is one of the most ambitious FPSs to be released this year, with some high-end graphics and a solid number of large maps. The gameplay, however, is what really makes it stands out, as instead of a standard death-match, it pits teams of hunters against a player-controlled monster, each trying to complete objectives or kill the other side. The variety of the monsters and hunters keep the gameplay fresh, and new content is released continually.

Evolve has so far proved incredibly popular due to its original gameplay, although it should be noted that it is a bit of an expense compared to most other games. Expect some paid DLC, but a lot of players consider it to be worth it. You can find it on Steam and to learn more you should check the Evolve website.

5. No Man’s Sky

Without a doubt, the game I’m most excited about to come out this year on the PC is No Man’s Sky, an exploration based game that uses procedural generation like nothing before has. It uses a seed to generate a universe that would take longer than a lifetime to explore, leaving you with an infinity of possibilities. In this universe, you can try to reach the center, engage in space combat, or perform other actions on a planet’s surface. The game is in a science fiction setting, but the game itself borders on science fiction.

If the developers deliver on everything they promise, we are looking at one of the greatest games ever made, which is quite an accomplishment for a relatively small studio. It has recently seen some issues and may be pushing back its deadlines, but we can only hope it still comes out by the end of the year. Either way, you should keep it on your radar.

I hope that all of these choices will give you enough options to help you plan your entertainment for the coming year. Some other things you might want to consider are the computer hardware you are using to play your games on, so that you can enjoy them all at the best level of performance you can afford. In addition, for the online games you may want to consider your security and use a VPN, especially on poorly protected networks. This way you don’t have to worry about putting your data at risk.
